Prenatal Breastfeeding Class - $35.00
Breastfeeding is a learning process for both the mother and the baby. Most Americans have not grown up exposed to infants breastfeeding as a cultural norm, or even observed other mammals nursing their young. As a culture, we have lost touch with many of our natural instincts and the valuable knowledge that was gained through osmosis when every mammal breastfed including the human mammal. Most expectant parents take some type of childbirth preparation and assume that breastfeeding will just come naturally. This is ironic, because while the labor and birth process is usually over in about 24 hours or less, feeding and caring for the baby will take years! Breastfeeding goes more smoothly with knowledge of the newborn and the newborns skills and understanding of the unique design of lactation.
This class is designed to help build confidence in the new mom as well has addressing how the dad can be of most help. The following information will be discussed:
Benefits of human milk to human babies and benefits of breastfeeding to mothers
An understanding of the milk making process
Understanding baby's reflexes and body language
Positioning and latch-on techniques
How to know the baby is feeding and swallowing milk
Signs of adequate intake for well-being and growth
Hand expression of milk (as well as pumps)
How to pick a truly breastfeeding friendly pediatrician
How to know if supplementation is necessary and how best to go about it
Resources you can trust for breastfeeding help
Dispelling some of the common myths regarding breastfeeding
